<br />
Welcome to summer, friends! I don't know about you, but I can't believe we're already closing in on the end of June...yikes. And while summer's heat is definitely not on my wish list, thinking about cool lakes is. So it's no wonder that I've got sailboats on the brain...<br />
<br />
I was trimming our large cedar trees the other day and this particular branch caught my eye because it's twiglet was almost straight up and down and I thought...hey that looks like a boat mast!<br />
<br />
And thus a hare-brained idea was born. The Mr. might say <i><span style="color: #0b5394;">another</span></i> hare-brained idea...but what does he know :-)<br />
<br />
So I was off and running. To <a href="http://www.craftwarehouse.com/" target="_blank">Craft Warehouse</a>, that is. To buy some delightful navy ticking fabric so I could make my very own DIY branch sailboat.<br />
<br />
First, I measured the fabric for the two sails by measuring the height of the sail twig:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l-eD8MoNYV0/VX87m76ahYI/AAAAAAAABiA/-jb3S037IYY/s1600/branch%2Bsailboat%2B-%2Bticking%2Bfabric%2Band%2Bbranch.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l-eD8MoNYV0/VX87m76ahYI/AAAAAAAABiA/-jb3S037IYY/s640/branch%2Bsailboat%2B-%2Bticking%2Bfabric%2Band%2Bbranch.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[ticking fabric].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I loved the raw frayed edge so I left it like that. Those raw edges of each sail are up against the mast.<br />
<br />
After cutting the fabric into two triangles, I took some screw eyes and hand-screwed them into the top of the branch at each end. Cedar is pretty soft so I was able to do it by hand but if your wood is tougher you can always pre-drill your holes.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PD2oE06tLhk/VX9BbSFLDPI/AAAAAAAABig/C4nEGZg8Jxc/s1600/branch%2Bsailboat%2B-%2Bscrew%2Beyes%2Band%2Btwine%2B-%2Boptional%2Bbuttonhole%2Btext.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PD2oE06tLhk/VX9BbSFLDPI/AAAAAAAABig/C4nEGZg8Jxc/s640/branch%2Bsailboat%2B-%2Bscrew%2Beyes%2Band%2Btwine%2B-%2Boptional%2Bbuttonhole%2Btext.jpg" width="610" /></a></div>
<br />
You can [kinda] see in the image above that I sewed a button hole where I wanted to tie the sail to the eye hook. <i><span style="color: #0b5394;">This is totally optional</span></i>, you could just as easily poke or cut a small hole in the fabric. I just love using my sewing machine so I break it out whenever I can.<br />
<br />
You can also see I turned the bottom of the sail under and hemmed it, but only because I wanted some extra texture from the hem thread. Again, totally optional...if you want all raw edges go for it!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
Then I just used some rope I already had to tie each sail to the branch in multiple places. <br />
<br />
This project couldn't have been simpler. Or cheaper!<br />
<i><span style="color: #0b5394;">Supplies:</span></i><br />
<span style="color: #0b5394;"><i>• </i>branch: free! [gotta love free]</span><br />
<span style="color: #0b5394;"><i>• </i>less than 1/2 yard of ticking fabric: $3</span><br />
<i style="color: #0b5394;">• </i><span style="color: #0b5394;">screw eyes: I only used 2 out of an 8-count bag, but I'll count the whole bag: $1.20</span><br />
<span style="color: #0b5394;"><i>• </i>rope: less than a foot, I'll be generous and say: $1</span><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #0b5394;"><br /></span></div>
This was a super fun project. Next time I'm out cutting trees, I'm going to keep my eyes open for a small branch and make a mini sailboat to go along with this guy...<br />
<br />
Best,<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Yesterday was just made for strolling. A bit warm, but not too warm. Flowers and plants exploded in color, birds chirping in every tree...<br />
<br />
Portland has some incredible neighborhoods that are wonderful to stroll through, and one of our favorites is called Goose Hollow.<br />
<br />
Like everything around Portland, it's easy to get to either by car or better yet take the MAX light rail train, get off at Goose Hollow, and head north. You'll soon be in this wonderfully shaded, old neighborhood.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GQAmPqFehHs/VTU8jXbcQFI/AAAAAAAABgM/qzZal_-kaHI/s1600/portland%2Bmax%2Btrain%2B-%2Bgoose%2Bhollow.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GQAmPqFehHs/VTU8jXbcQFI/AAAAAAAABgM/qzZal_-kaHI/s1600/portland%2Bmax%2Btrain%2B-%2Bgoose%2Bhollow.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Goose Hollow is chock full of picturesque homes perched high on hills, with forest views and commanding views of the city. Not to mention character galore.<br />
<br />
Like this purple house I showed you earlier. Can you believe?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0CIXHMtHi1Q/VTU19oQZRSI/AAAAAAAABew/yeantTp_oHg/s1600/goose%2Bhollow%2B-%2Bpurple%2Bhouse%2B-%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0CIXHMtHi1Q/VTU19oQZRSI/AAAAAAAABew/yeantTp_oHg/s1600/goose%2Bhollow%2B-%2Bpurple%2Bhouse%2B-%2B1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
It has a mass of wisteria next to it that we could smell from a block away.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jMp1qkK7_Us/VTU1t2pwnkI/AAAAAAAABec/ZS64XGUngNQ/s1600/goose%2Bhollow%2B-%2Bwisteria%2B02%2B-%2BVersion%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jMp1qkK7_Us/VTU1t2pwnkI/AAAAAAAABec/ZS64XGUngNQ/s1600/goose%2Bhollow%2B-%2Bwisteria%2B02%2B-%2BVersion%2B2.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[wisteria!]</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Even the side view of the house is gorgeous, check those corbels and the little spires!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KPLewsOh9hA/VTU1_bSq--I/AAAAAAAABe8/W0-HU--2YJ8/s1600/goose%2Bhollow%2B-%2Bpurple%2Bhouse%2B-%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KPLewsOh9hA/VTU1_bSq--I/AAAAAAAABe8/W0-HU--2YJ8/s1600/goose%2Bhollow%2B-%2Bpurple%2Bhouse%2B-%2B2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
There are century-old rock walls with moss and vines hugging them, and gates leading up to the houses:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qOw8yvBfr8c/VTU5sCacItI/AAAAAAAABfc/54C08DeDWao/s1600/goose%2Bhollow%2B-%2Brock%2Bgate.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qOw8yvBfr8c/VTU5sCacItI/AAAAAAAABfc/54C08DeDWao/s1600/goose%2Bhollow%2B-%2Brock%2Bgate.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[rock wall and gate]</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
If you need a little breather or just want to sit and soak it all in, there are stone benches flanking the viaduct bridge:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5Go-QEfaaCI/VTU6UvD_HrI/AAAAAAAABfk/3PRCTzRGsdY/s1600/goose%2Bhollow%2B-%2Bvista%2Bave%2Bviaduct%2B01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5Go-QEfaaCI/VTU6UvD_HrI/AAAAAAAABfk/3PRCTzRGsdY/s1600/goose%2Bhollow%2B-%2Bvista%2Bave%2Bviaduct%2B01.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9sorNbPKY3Q/VTU6dq5hemI/AAAAAAAABfs/exVYDs7l8A4/s1600/goose%2Bhollow%2B-%2Bvista%2Bave%2Bviaduct%2B02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9sorNbPKY3Q/VTU6dq5hemI/AAAAAAAABfs/exVYDs7l8A4/s1600/goose%2Bhollow%2B-%2Bvista%2Bave%2Bviaduct%2B02.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Around every corner there's another gem of a home, like this brick red one tucked high in the trees, with an amazing forest view out the back:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-c9HiIixTZNQ/VTU61EG1w1I/AAAAAAAABf0/Zn9De4o5MgU/s1600/goose%2Bhollow%2B-%2Bhouse%2Bin%2Bthe%2Btrees.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-c9HiIixTZNQ/VTU61EG1w1I/AAAAAAAABf0/Zn9De4o5MgU/s1600/goose%2Bhollow%2B-%2Bhouse%2Bin%2Bthe%2Btrees.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
or this beauty with its wonderful balustrade, not to mention that amazing tree out front!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wNz1bVp3Rto/VTU7MuXB8rI/AAAAAAAABf8/6Z6TLXtFq-k/s1600/goose%2Bhollow%2B-%2Bhuge%2Btree.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wNz1bVp3Rto/VTU7MuXB8rI/AAAAAAAABf8/6Z6TLXtFq-k/s1600/goose%2Bhollow%2B-%2Bhuge%2Btree.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
As our mild Spring days get longer and longer, I imagine we'll be taking more of these neighborhood strolls. If I'm smart, I'll make sure my phone is well-charged!<br />

Happy First Day of Spring friends!<br />
Everyone knows I'm all about the blues and greys, but Spring usually has me thinking about creamy, blushy pinks and soft greens.<br />
<br />

Do you all have cherry trees where you live? For me, Spring in Portland is the time when I race out to get pictures of the cherry blossoms. I love them on the tree but they're especially lovely when they're covering the ground like pink snow:<br />

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZMXOra41dF4/VOdqW_f40AI/AAAAAAAABZI/9NWn4P-bpSo/s1600/watco%2Bkitchen%2Bcabinet%2Bcollage.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZMXOra41dF4/VOdqW_f40AI/AAAAAAAABZI/9NWn4P-bpSo/s1600/watco%2Bkitchen%2Bcabinet%2Bcollage.png" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
We have this particular cabinet door in the kitchen that is just below and to the right of the sink. Ummm, I guess it gets splashed. A lot. Because seriously...look at the picture below. Yikes.<br />
<br />
I'm super embarrassed to show you this before picture:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xYON9T7AO90/VOZYiFF6_hI/AAAAAAAABYI/8_PO2lYSW24/s1600/02%2Bcabinet%2Bdoor%2Bbefore%2Byikes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xYON9T7AO90/VOZYiFF6_hI/AAAAAAAABYI/8_PO2lYSW24/s1600/02%2Bcabinet%2Bdoor%2Bbefore%2Byikes.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[ack!]</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Wow, up close the damage was hideous. Not only was the wood scratched, it was <i>buckled</i> at the bottom of the inset panel.<br />
<br />
I knew I could sand the whole thing down, then try to find/remember what finish was on the wood and hope against hope that after all that work it would sorta kinda maybe match it's neighbors. <br />
<br />
Then one happy day I found <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/230457705908368387/" target="_blank">this on Pinterest</a> [thanks <a href="http://taradaramadeit.com/" target="_blank">Tara</a>!], which showed how to rejuvenate scratched wood with <a href="http://www.homedepot.com/p/Watco-1-pt-Rejuvenating-Oil-66051H/100187718" target="_blank">Watco Rejuvenating Oil.</a> So I thought, why not? If it doesn't work I'm no worse off than I was before. At only $6 it was sure worth a try.<br />
<br />
First, I removed the door from the cabinet [ooh look at the nicks on the drawer above! those will get fixed as well]:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qBEe71_4sPU/VOZY5qphk3I/AAAAAAAABYQ/yq21F8NUtrk/s1600/01%2Bremove%2Bcabinet%2Bdoor.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qBEe71_4sPU/VOZY5qphk3I/AAAAAAAABYQ/yq21F8NUtrk/s1600/01%2Bremove%2Bcabinet%2Bdoor.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[removing cabinet door]. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I took the door down to the garage and gave it a light sanding with some superfine grit sanding paper. Watco's instructions don't say to sand, but I wanted to smooth down the buckling a bit if I could.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QHtliSYLVTA/VOZZx28f0HI/AAAAAAAABYg/IC7RaqiDcqE/s1600/04%2Bgentle%2Bsanding%2Bof%2Bcabinet%2Bdoor.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QHtliSYLVTA/VOZZx28f0HI/AAAAAAAABYg/IC7RaqiDcqE/s1600/04%2Bgentle%2Bsanding%2Bof%2Bcabinet%2Bdoor.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[a wee bit of sanding].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-M3RzJNwGnkA/VOZZwr1jCDI/AAAAAAAABYY/gpNzdKfieAg/s1600/05%2Bwatco%2Brejuvenating%2Boil.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-M3RzJNwGnkA/VOZZwr1jCDI/AAAAAAAABYY/gpNzdKfieAg/s1600/05%2Bwatco%2Brejuvenating%2Boil.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[the magic potion].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I followed Watco's instructions, which are basically:<br />
1. rub the product into the damaged area with a clean cloth<br />
2. wait 10 minutes<br />
3. wipe with a clean cloth<br />
<br />
Simple! Even I could do that!<br />
<br />
And check the result:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UPz0LA40xX8/VOZaEtBJ7lI/AAAAAAAABYo/SE0H3V05SJo/s1600/06%2Bcabinet%2Bdoor%2Bafter%2Bwatco%2Bapplication.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UPz0LA40xX8/VOZaEtBJ7lI/AAAAAAAABYo/SE0H3V05SJo/s1600/06%2Bcabinet%2Bdoor%2Bafter%2Bwatco%2Bapplication.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[after watco application].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
While not perfect, I think it's 1,000 times better. You can still see the damage at the bottom of the inset panel but once it's hung, that area is down by your feet so it won't even be noticeable.<br />
And I didn't expect it to be perfect. As you saw, that door was pretty destroyed. In truth it probably needs to be replaced. But at least I can put it off for a while longer!<br />
<br />
Friends, can you handle two more before and after pictures?<br />
<br />
Take a look at the scratches on this kitchen drawer:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--J01NPZ9xDc/VOZalkDruMI/AAAAAAAABYw/MMu4rivTdIg/s1600/10%2Bdrawer%2Bfront%2Bbefore%2Bwatco%2Bapplication.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--J01NPZ9xDc/VOZalkDruMI/AAAAAAAABYw/MMu4rivTdIg/s1600/10%2Bdrawer%2Bfront%2Bbefore%2Bwatco%2Bapplication.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[what are we, animals? geez].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
And now after a swipe of Watco magic:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1u1xzbNc7bs/VOZaw4zTOuI/AAAAAAAABY4/4bEGmbjt7T8/s1600/11%2Bdrawer%2Bfront%2Bafter%2Bwatco%2Bapplication.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1u1xzbNc7bs/VOZaw4zTOuI/AAAAAAAABY4/4bEGmbjt7T8/s1600/11%2Bdrawer%2Bfront%2Bafter%2Bwatco%2Bapplication.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[after the magic].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Now that's incredible! :-)<br />
<br />
If you plan to do this, of course please test it on an inconspicuous area first.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[feature wall: picture frame molding in the master bedroom].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Our master bedroom has this feature wall, under a peaked ceiling, that you see right when you walk into the room.<br />
The Mr. hates that wall. And the ceiling, come to think of it.<br />
<br />
I was ok with the wall, but wanted to make it stand out more. Nothing drastic or dramatic, just a little added texture and depth with some picture frame molding painted the same color as the wall.<br />
Simple and elegant.<br />
<br />
So out came...you guessed it! My favorite purchase of all time, my Ryobi cordless nail gun.<br />
<br />
I tell you, there's no rest for this poor thing.<br />
First, came <a href="http://herlovelynest.blogspot.com/2014/01/the-great-board-batten-wall-part-2.html" target="_blank">The Great Board & Batten Wall</a>:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TSqjQVOhRN8/Uuq-OtFobFI/AAAAAAAAA5Q/W58EyaLvyiw/s1600/board%2Band%2Bbatten%2B-%2Bwith%2Bconsole%2Btable%2B-%2B5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TSqjQVOhRN8/Uuq-OtFobFI/AAAAAAAAA5Q/W58EyaLvyiw/s1600/board%2Band%2Bbatten%2B-%2Bwith%2Bconsole%2Btable%2B-%2B5.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[The Great Board and Batten Wall].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Not too long after that was the <a href="http://herlovelynest.blogspot.com/2014/08/plank-wall-in-dining-room-tutorial.html" target="_blank">shiplap wall/plank wall</a> in the dining room:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-n1mwX7Ac5DU/U-peCaxUg7I/AAAAAAAAA_Y/erxSrRKamDM/s1600/lavender%2B-%2Bagainst%2Bplank%2Bwall%2B-%2B1%2Bcopyright.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-n1mwX7Ac5DU/U-peCaxUg7I/AAAAAAAAA_Y/erxSrRKamDM/s1600/lavender%2B-%2Bagainst%2Bplank%2Bwall%2B-%2B1%2Bcopyright.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[shiplap wall/plank wall].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Right on it's heels came the <a href="http://herlovelynest.blogspot.com/2014/11/diy-lattice-feature-wall.html" target="_blank">lattice wall in the stairwell</a>:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mFxQO6unFQA/VF_q-ouoT8I/AAAAAAAABKI/S5DgwRHFMgo/s1600/diy_latticewall_collage.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mFxQO6unFQA/VF_q-ouoT8I/AAAAAAAABKI/S5DgwRHFMgo/s1600/diy_latticewall_collage.png" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[lattice wall].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
And now here we are again, battery charged and ready to create a feature wall in the master bedroom.<br />
Here's the wall before, inexplicably with a stationary bike in front of it:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Z_2XajM9yPw/VOT73Xe7dYI/AAAAAAAABXU/sYh_KP8mgRc/s1600/bedroom%2Bwall%2B-%2Bbefore%2Bwith%2Bbike%2Band%2Btext.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Z_2XajM9yPw/VOT73Xe7dYI/AAAAAAAABXU/sYh_KP8mgRc/s1600/bedroom%2Bwall%2B-%2Bbefore%2Bwith%2Bbike%2Band%2Btext.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[a bike? really?]</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Not quite the feature I was looking for. Obviously that bike was the first to go.<br />
<br />
Then off to Home Depot to look at molding options. So many options!<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cgfw_V6R7qU/VOT8W9cB7KI/AAAAAAAABXc/EOJ9M8jL9EU/s1600/bedroom%2Bpicture%2Bframe%2Bmolding%2B-%2Bchoices.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cgfw_V6R7qU/VOT8W9cB7KI/AAAAAAAABXc/EOJ9M8jL9EU/s1600/bedroom%2Bpicture%2Bframe%2Bmolding%2B-%2Bchoices.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[home depot, molding options].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
We went for this one, since it looked the most like picture frame molding:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k6K1IETDFzE/VOT8proSF6I/AAAAAAAABXk/49Hqt_XQpC4/s1600/bedroom%2Bpicture%2Bframe%2Bmolding%2B-%2Bprice.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k6K1IETDFzE/VOT8proSF6I/AAAAAAAABXk/49Hqt_XQpC4/s1600/bedroom%2Bpicture%2Bframe%2Bmolding%2B-%2Bprice.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[winner winner].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I sort of arbitrarily decided on the size I wanted for each frame, which ended up being 32"x66".<br />
Total molding cost only $30.38 [49 ft x $0.62 per foot]. Wow, what a deal!<br />
<br />
We cut the pieces on a 45 degree angle, painted them the same color as the wall [Artist Studio, by Ralph Lauren], and nailed them up using our trusty Ryobi nailgun. A little spackle on the nail holes and some touch up paint, and it was done!<br />
<br />
Looking better already:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rrx7DjM0-TY/VOT-Fac7moI/AAAAAAAABXw/JunHJ932u8o/s1600/bedroom%2Bpicture%2Bframe%2Bmolding%2B-%2Bno%2Bart.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rrx7DjM0-TY/VOT-Fac7moI/AAAAAAAABXw/JunHJ932u8o/s1600/bedroom%2Bpicture%2Bframe%2Bmolding%2B-%2Bno%2Bart.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[molding up!].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Better still, the simple art went back up...pictures I've taken while exploring the Pacific Northwest:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PGsAmc5uh3s/VOT-ZVb8hzI/AAAAAAAABX4/yUzMKUOBVho/s1600/bedroom%2Bpicture%2Bframe%2Bmolding%2B-%2Ball%2Bdone.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PGsAmc5uh3s/VOT-ZVb8hzI/AAAAAAAABX4/yUzMKUOBVho/s1600/bedroom%2Bpicture%2Bframe%2Bmolding%2B-%2Ball%2Bdone.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[pictures hung].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
And here's a closeup of the frames:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-49isIcnau4w/VOT5hdwb4SI/AAAAAAAABXI/ojDf8ZEpBSQ/s1600/bedroom%2Bpicture%2Bframe%2Bmolding%2B-%2Bcloseup%2B-%2B02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-49isIcnau4w/VOT5hdwb4SI/AAAAAAAABXI/ojDf8ZEpBSQ/s1600/bedroom%2Bpicture%2Bframe%2Bmolding%2B-%2Bcloseup%2B-%2B02.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[closeup].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
There you have it friends! As always, please let me know if you have any questions and I'll be happy to answer them if I can.<br />

<br />
Some of you may know I live in Portland Oregon.<br />
<br />
What you may or may not know is that the neighborhoods around downtown Portland are filled with absolutely gorgeous turn of the [last] century homes. I adore the fact that most of them are still private residences, lovingly cared for by their owners.<br />
<br />
So you can do some serious house drooling around here. For reals.<br />
<br />
One of my favorites is the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathan_Loeb_House" target="_blank">Nathan Loeb House</a> on NW 22nd Ave. It's a stunning Queen Anne with even more stunning stained glass windows, scalloped siding detail around that big round front window, and a super cool bat light on the front porch. <br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JlcIeHWh_Zw/VLVihGiS60I/AAAAAAAABWo/s5R7faQ0DOY/s1600/nathan%2Bloeb%2Bhouse%2B726%2Bnw%2B22nd%2Bave%2B-%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JlcIeHWh_Zw/VLVihGiS60I/AAAAAAAABWo/s5R7faQ0DOY/s1600/nathan%2Bloeb%2Bhouse%2B726%2Bnw%2B22nd%2Bave%2B-%2B1.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[Nathan Loeb House, built in 1893]</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
[So sorry I thought I caught a shot of the <a href="http://www.rejuvenation.com/catalog/products/drake" target="_blank">bat light</a> on the front porch, but alas...I didn't. it's <a href="http://www.rejuvenation.com/catalog/products/drake" target="_blank">this one</a> from the wonderful <a href="http://www.rejuvenation.com/" target="_blank">Rejuvenation</a> store in Portland]<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr></tr>
</tbody></table>
Quite near the Nathan Loeb House is another favorite, which I'm not sure has a name:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TASCgo8QqsU/VLVjqIandvI/AAAAAAAABWw/Y8n2L8QZozA/s1600/house%2Bin%2Bdowntown%2Bportland%2Bapprox%2Bnw%2B22nd%2Bave.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TASCgo8QqsU/VLVjqIandvI/AAAAAAAABWw/Y8n2L8QZozA/s1600/house%2Bin%2Bdowntown%2Bportland%2Bapprox%2Bnw%2B22nd%2Bave.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<br />
Don't you just adore the paint colors? And the lacy corbels? And that porch? And, and, and...<br />
<br />
<br />
I'm so glad I remembered to share these beauties with you today! Thanks for house-drooling with me, friends!<br />

I hope you had a gorgeous holiday season.<br />
<br />
Didn't it just fly by? I can't believe I'm [slowly] taking down the Christmas decorations.<br />
<br />
But don't despair! Even though Christmas is but a memory, there is still plenty of winter left for cozy decorating:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-if03Zj_OxiU/VKcSFdDRyhI/AAAAAAAABWE/ehEDBOA1U1g/s1600/winter%2Bvignette%2Bfaux%2Bfur%2Bblanket%2Band%2Btable%2Bwith%2Bpinecone%2Bwreaths%2B-%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-if03Zj_OxiU/VKcSFdDRyhI/AAAAAAAABWE/ehEDBOA1U1g/s1600/winter%2Bvignette%2Bfaux%2Bfur%2Bblanket%2Band%2Btable%2Bwith%2Bpinecone%2Bwreaths%2B-%2B3.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<br />
Pull up a chair. Throw an uber cozy faux fur blankie on top. Fill a wonderful basket with frosty pinecone wreaths. Hmmm now what's missing?<br />
<br />
Oh yes. The coffee. Sorely needed to survive a Christmas dismantling session.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
[Interesting how that meant the basket needed reorganizing after the coffee came around!]<br />
<br />
What about you? Does Christmas decor still rule in your house? Or is it already long gone?<br />
<br />
Wishing you all the best this New Year!<br />

We go walking at night and the neighborhoods are so beautifully decorated this year. The house is a joyous mess of lights, reindeer, the scent of pine and cedar, and ornaments, so many ornaments. I just adore this time of year.<br />
<br />
This year, I'm all about the rustic look and that includes presents wrapped in brown craft paper. Have you ever done this?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sKwzDDoqUtQ/VJieUw61HXI/AAAAAAAABVs/A1fVpSRXg8o/s1600/kraft%2Bpaper%2Bwrapping%2B-%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sKwzDDoqUtQ/VJieUw61HXI/AAAAAAAABVs/A1fVpSRXg8o/s1600/kraft%2Bpaper%2Bwrapping%2B-%2B1.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<br />
I think it looks wonderful with simple ribbon, this year I chose a pretty gunmetal grey.<br />
<br />
Maybe tie on a <a href="http://herlovelynest.blogspot.com/2014/11/diy-beautiful-bleached-pinecones.html" target="_blank">bleached pine cone</a> or two. And how about some twine wrapped around and around?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iLXWL8e64vE/VJifDmf_umI/AAAAAAAABV0/-3E9nE2CaEs/s1600/kraft%2Bpaper%2Bwrapping%2B-%2Bcloseup%2B-%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iLXWL8e64vE/VJifDmf_umI/AAAAAAAABV0/-3E9nE2CaEs/s1600/kraft%2Bpaper%2Bwrapping%2B-%2Bcloseup%2B-%2B1.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<br />
I meant to cut some fresh cedar from the garden and tuck that in too.<br />
<br />
Ah well, there's always next year!<br />

Hi lovelies!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I just returned to Portland from two weeks at my parents' house. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Their taste is flawless! And I was so charmed by the Christmas touches in their home, I wanted to share them with you. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<i>[of course I asked permission first! don't want to get put on restriction don't you know]</i></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So last Spring my parents moved to this charming little town near Ft. Worth TX, called Granbury. </div>
</div>
<div>
It has a wonderful courthouse square in the old downtown, surrounded by shops and an opera house.</div>
<div>
This is the courthouse on the Square:</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dTKfg_ETWT8/VJMKDKWZR6I/AAAAAAAABUo/10MEgF8WEZE/s1600/granbury%2Bcourthouse%2Bat%2Bchristmas%2B-%2B3%2B-%2Bwatermark.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dTKfg_ETWT8/VJMKDKWZR6I/AAAAAAAABUo/10MEgF8WEZE/s1600/granbury%2Bcourthouse%2Bat%2Bchristmas%2B-%2B3%2B-%2Bwatermark.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[granbury courthouse at the Square].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
Can you believe how wonderful? Those are Christmas lights at the top that stretch down to each corner of the Square. I loved that shot so much I've already blown it up to 16x20 and framed it!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But I digress. I'm meant to be showing you Christmas decorations at the house, I think.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This is the family room. I love the elegance of the red berries in the vase, and the little vignette on the coffee table.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[lantern with lights near the fireplace]</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
The dining room has pops of red with more berries and a snowflake runner, as well as twinkle lights and chandelier greenery:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[I've already got dibs on this sideboard if they ever tire of it]</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Love those battery operated twinkle lights! They're on flexible wire so they're super easy to tuck into tight spaces without seeing the bulky cord you typically have on Christmas light strands.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Their master bedroom even got in on the act! With red and cream as the primary colors in their room, a red lumbar pillow and a wicker tray of berries add the perfect Christmas touch.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-D4n1xC_vhME/VJMMwJCyHhI/AAAAAAAABVU/wJajQddKnpY/s1600/parents%2Bhouse%2Bat%2Bchristmas%2B-%2Bmaster%2B-%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-D4n1xC_vhME/VJMMwJCyHhI/AAAAAAAABVU/wJajQddKnpY/s1600/parents%2Bhouse%2Bat%2Bchristmas%2B-%2Bmaster%2B-%2B2.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A snowy wreath with berries and plaid ribbon bring Christmas color to the dresser wall. Oops I forgot to move the Christmas card box!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

You might've noticed I didn't have a shot of a Christmas tree...unfortunately it got lost in their move so they'll be buying a new one. Next year!</div>

</div>
Hi friends!<br />
One of my favorite-ist seasonal decorating tricks is to swap out the art in my frames.<br />
<br />
Simple. Easy. Right up my alley.<br />
<br />
So here are a couple of free Christmas printables for you. I made them 3300x4800 so they should print up pretty well at larger sizes. I usually print mine at Costco; when I uploaded them to Costco's online service I didn't get a resolution warning till I went above 16x20 in size.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><i>To download the files:</i></span><br />
right-click [or control-click] on the image and save/download the file. It should download the full size; please let me know if it doesn't and I'll fix it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-U0eGLOF6fG0/VIeLIfIgV7I/AAAAAAAABUM/ael8ZMlDvaM/s1600/joyeux_noel_reindeer.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-U0eGLOF6fG0/VIeLIfIgV7I/AAAAAAAABUM/ael8ZMlDvaM/s1600/joyeux_noel_reindeer.jpg" height="640" width="440" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xANMAcFyZ_E/VIeISgS93NI/AAAAAAAABUA/qvXaEjOmTU4/s1600/tinseltangle.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xANMAcFyZ_E/VIeISgS93NI/AAAAAAAABUA/qvXaEjOmTU4/s1600/tinseltangle.jpg" height="640" width="440" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Merry Christmas!<br />

Happy December 1st, friends!<br />
<br />
Did you stop to take a breath after Thanksgiving?<br />
<br />
Or did you dive head-first into Christmas decorating? <br />
<br />
It seems like the few weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas fly by so quickly, there's barely time to put up the Christmas decorations. I tell you, a little eggnog latte really helps it along :-)<br />
<br />
I love decorating with mason jars and glass vessels. They really work well for snowy little Christmas scenes and they're so simple to do.<br />
<br />
This year I did the very easy tree and epsom salt combo...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cJXbQgHu340/VH0HXcOYBPI/AAAAAAAABTc/Yc7lzuZWyGw/s1600/mason%2Bjar%2Bchristmas%2Bvignettes%2B-%2Bsupplies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cJXbQgHu340/VH0HXcOYBPI/AAAAAAAABTc/Yc7lzuZWyGw/s1600/mason%2Bjar%2Bchristmas%2Bvignettes%2B-%2Bsupplies.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<br />
Then I decided to use one of my footed glass vessels and put a wee village inside. The Dollar Store has some great miniature village pieces...churches, little houses, frozen ponds, and adorable bridges.<br />
<br />
I picked up a beautiful church...and gave it a misting of my favorite color, Rust-O-Leum Champagne Mist. I tucked the church into my footed vessel with a little bottlebrush tree and some fresh cedar clippings from my garden:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CgBFgl1F8ew/VH0IKbH9ALI/AAAAAAAABTk/K5dtgcv9OCQ/s1600/mason%2Bjar%2Bvillage%2B-%2B04.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CgBFgl1F8ew/VH0IKbH9ALI/AAAAAAAABTk/K5dtgcv9OCQ/s1600/mason%2Bjar%2Bvillage%2B-%2B04.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[dollar store church sprayed with champagne mist].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Because I gave it only a light misting, you can still see some of the original colors under the Champagne. I like how it gives it a little more depth and texture than if I'd hard-sprayed it all over.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KJokK0BiwIk/VH0FnucDnpI/AAAAAAAABTQ/lK4xtNmA9gg/s1600/mason%2Bjar%2Bvillage%2B-%2B02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KJokK0BiwIk/VH0FnucDnpI/AAAAAAAABTQ/lK4xtNmA9gg/s1600/mason%2Bjar%2Bvillage%2B-%2B02.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
PS. Oh! That print! It's from the wonderful <a href="http://caravanshoppe.com/collections/christmas/products/noel-chalk-set" target="_blank">Noel Chalk Set at the Caravan Shoppe</a>. <br />
<br />
<br />
Wishing you all a peaceful and blessed Christmas,<br />

<br />
I know I might've turned a bunch of you guys off with the post title.<br />
<br />
It's really not that serious.<br />
<br />
More of a joke between my cousin and myself to deflect the blowback we get by spending Thanksgiving 1,000 miles from the chaos that is dinner with my in-laws.<br />
<br />
Let me explain...<br />
<br />
My cousin is actually my husband's cousin, she just happens to be a good friend of mine. A few years ago we decided we'd had it with the chaos and inevitable fights and tears that go down during the family's Thanksgiving get together. So every year, she flies to Portland for what we've dubbed Rebel Thanksgiving. So named because we get a lot of flak for our choice, while we just smile and nod and secretly plan our super-fun agenda.<br />
<br />
Mostly it involves eating our way through the entire city of Portland.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DP7OomoqmhU/VHokOmcw0AI/AAAAAAAABRk/T7P9pS1PyaY/s1600/breakfast%2Bat%2Bmother's%2Bbistro.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DP7OomoqmhU/VHokOmcw0AI/AAAAAAAABRk/T7P9pS1PyaY/s1600/breakfast%2Bat%2Bmother's%2Bbistro.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[breakfast at Mother's Bistro, downtown Portland].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Breakfast at <a href="http://www.mothersbistro.com/" target="_blank">Mother's Bistro</a> in downtown Portland is a must. Seriously. You must go if you're ever in town. I recommend the Wild Salmon Hash, it's simply incredible.<br />
<br />
If the <a href="http://www.winterhawks.com/" target="_blank">Winterhawks</a> hockey team is playing at home [yes! they were at home this year]: we take the train to the game, yell ourselves hoarse, and yes, they always win when we go! It's like we're some kind of crazy good luck charm. Or it may have to do with their skill...they've been Western Conference Champions for the last 4 years.<br />

<br />
A trip to <a href="http://www.powells.com/remodel-2014" target="_blank">Powell's</a> is always a good idea. Love this mug I saw there!<br />

<br />
To work off all the food we eat, a good hike is in order. This year we got soaked at Multnomah Falls, then hiked to the top of Beacon Rock. We barely got off the rock before dark. Whew!<br />

<br />
Thanksgiving morning we took a beautiful walk through the Park Blocks in downtown Portland. There were still lots of gorgeous yellow leaves on the trees and barely a soul around. It was so peaceful.<br />

<br />
Here in the Pacific Northwest, pinecone gathering can be done with your eyes closed.<br />
<br />
I mean, they're <b>everywhere</b>.<br />
<br />
Since I love decorating with natural elements, I've got a pretty big stash of these guys.<br />
<br />
I love them natural, painted...and now bleached!<br />
<br />
I first read about bleaching pinecones on <a href="http://www.countryliving.com/outdoor/decorating/title-162-6#slide-10" target="_blank">Country Living Magazine's website</a>. Their instructions are wonderful and really simple...it basically boils down to this:<br />
<br />
<i><span style="color: #0b5394;">Step 1</span></i>: place pinecones in a glass container; I chose a glass cylinder vase:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cdL9D-NKgac/VG0wNr9DHpI/AAAAAAAABQk/CYUALVHxT3s/s1600/01%2Bplace%2Bpinecones%2Bin%2Bglass.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cdL9D-NKgac/VG0wNr9DHpI/AAAAAAAABQk/CYUALVHxT3s/s1600/01%2Bplace%2Bpinecones%2Bin%2Bglass.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[step 1].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<i><span style="color: #0b5394;"><br /></span></i>
<i><span style="color: #0b5394;">Step 2</span></i>: fill the container 2/3 full with bleach, fill the rest with plain water<br />
<i><span style="color: #0b5394;">Step 3</span></i>: pinecones float! place something inside your container that will keep those rascals submerged. I used a juice glass:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vBZrYQIcEtA/VG0wpa_4a4I/AAAAAAAABQs/E6yhcboPmZ0/s1600/02%2Badd%2Bbleach%2Band%2Bwater.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vBZrYQIcEtA/VG0wpa_4a4I/AAAAAAAABQs/E6yhcboPmZ0/s1600/02%2Badd%2Bbleach%2Band%2Bwater.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[step 2 and 3].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<i><span style="color: #0b5394;"><br /></span></i>
<i><span style="color: #0b5394;">Step 4</span></i>: leave pinecones submerged in the bleach mixture for 24 to 36 hours. You'll notice I've got mine down in the garage. No sense smelling that stuff inside the house for 2 days, am I right? Plus yikes you wouldn't want to spill it inside.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<i><span style="color: #0b5394;">Step 5</span></i>: remove the pinecones and rinse with clean water. the pinecones will be closed up.<br />
<span style="color: #0b5394; font-style: italic;">Interesting sidenote: </span>even after 36 hours, most of my pinecones still looked pretty dark brown and I'll admit I was disappointed because I thought it hadn't worked. so I left a couple in the bleach mixture for an extra 24 hours and the rest I put in the dryer to dry.<br />
<br />
<i><span style="color: #0b5394;">Step 6</span></i>: dry the pinecones. I have a rack for my clothes dryer so I put them on the rack and ran the dryer on medium, checking on them regularly. After about an hour, they had turned a lovely shade of light tan and had started to open up again:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9EYsD5zmQAg/VG0yxy9tC-I/AAAAAAAABQ4/DueGICgtE_o/s1600/03%2Bdry%2Bbleached%2Bpinecones%2Bin%2Bdryer.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9EYsD5zmQAg/VG0yxy9tC-I/AAAAAAAABQ4/DueGICgtE_o/s1600/03%2Bdry%2Bbleached%2Bpinecones%2Bin%2Bdryer.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[step 6].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<i><span style="color: #0b5394;"><br /></span></i>
<i><span style="color: #0b5394;">Step 7</span></i>: display your beautiful bleached pinecones!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cnr6eBWdHOw/VG0thTlpW3I/AAAAAAAABQQ/cpRC10sMuCw/s1600/05%2Bpinecone%2Bvignette.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cnr6eBWdHOw/VG0thTlpW3I/AAAAAAAABQQ/cpRC10sMuCw/s1600/05%2Bpinecone%2Bvignette.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<br />
Aren't they the most gorgeous creamy tan color?<br />
Here's a closeup, I love how the tips still have a bit of darker brown on them:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DmvqFaX9eKo/VG0zYMRu4xI/AAAAAAAABRA/FV3jfT7YOkE/s1600/07%2Btan%2Bpinecone%2Bcloseup.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DmvqFaX9eKo/VG0zYMRu4xI/AAAAAAAABRA/FV3jfT7YOkE/s1600/07%2Btan%2Bpinecone%2Bcloseup.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<br />
<div>
Remember the couple of pinecones that I said I left in the bleach for an additional 24 hours? They did indeed get whiter, but you can see this one came pretty close to disintegrating:</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s_gSjaI89hg/VG0zuE1Ed8I/AAAAAAAABRI/JgdJ_FKtTq4/s1600/06%2Bwhite%2Bpinecone%2Bcloseup.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s_gSjaI89hg/VG0zuE1Ed8I/AAAAAAAABRI/JgdJ_FKtTq4/s1600/06%2Bwhite%2Bpinecone%2Bcloseup.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[creamy white pinecone left in bleach an extra day].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
So I think I'll stick to the 24-36 hour rule in the future!<br />
<br />
Have you tried this project yet? I'd love to hear about it in the Comments below and as always I'm happy to answer any questions you might have.<br />

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-G-xXmBkjoTE/VGagROgszyI/AAAAAAAABLY/vpKDP3olJdk/s1600/farmhouse%2Bchristmas%2Bvignette%2B-%2Btime%2Blapse%2B-%2B16%2B-%2Bheader%2Bimage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-G-xXmBkjoTE/VGagROgszyI/AAAAAAAABLY/vpKDP3olJdk/s1600/farmhouse%2Bchristmas%2Bvignette%2B-%2Btime%2Blapse%2B-%2B16%2B-%2Bheader%2Bimage.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<br />
Ok don't hate me.<br />
<br />
I know it's still November.<br />
<br />
I couldn't help it. I was putting away the Halloween decorations and mine eyes fell upon the Christmas decorations...and I just grabbed one bucket. Just one.<br />
<br />
The magic was that bucket held the blue milk glass globes that I scored on clearance from <a href="http://www.wisteria.com/Milk-Glass-Globes-Large-Aqua/productinfo/T10608" target="_blank">Wisteria</a> last year. But today is your lucky day, because <a href="http://www.wisteria.com/Milk-Glass-Globes-Large-Aqua/productinfo/T10608" target="_blank">they brought them back</a> again this year!<br />
<br />
I thought I'd do something a little different and show you the evolution of my farmhouse Christmas vignette.<br />
<br />
For me, farmhouse is natural elements, lots of texture, rubbed and worn wood tones, with just the merest hint of sparkle thrown in for balance...<br />
<br />
Ready? Here we go...<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
First, I placed a tree and a mason jar snow scene on the console table: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Om3kXsq4k10/VGakzl3X7lI/AAAAAAAABMY/xneOSFjjus8/s1600/farmhouse%2Bchristmas%2Bvignette%2B-%2Btime%2Blapse%2B-%2B01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Om3kXsq4k10/VGakzl3X7lI/AAAAAAAABMY/xneOSFjjus8/s1600/farmhouse%2Bchristmas%2Bvignette%2B-%2Btime%2Blapse%2B-%2B01.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;">Next came my rustic Target lantern [another clearance score!], filled with simple white glass ornaments:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5F6r2OR6834/VGak6x7G0MI/AAAAAAAABMg/MaLLUpUFbwY/s1600/farmhouse%2Bchristmas%2Bvignette%2B-%2Btime%2Blapse%2B-%2B02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5F6r2OR6834/VGak6x7G0MI/AAAAAAAABMg/MaLLUpUFbwY/s1600/farmhouse%2Bchristmas%2Bvignette%2B-%2Btime%2Blapse%2B-%2B02.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Added another mason jar snow scene. Can never have enough of those!:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-O2Pax-EHUFo/VGalKRr6csI/AAAAAAAABMw/pahXFCnuPgU/s1600/farmhouse%2Bchristmas%2Bvignette%2B-%2Btime%2Blapse%2B-%2B04.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-O2Pax-EHUFo/VGalKRr6csI/AAAAAAAABMw/pahXFCnuPgU/s1600/farmhouse%2Bchristmas%2Bvignette%2B-%2Btime%2Blapse%2B-%2B04.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Oh hello Mr. White & Gold Reindeer, aren't you pretty?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Al4i1kWccHk/VGalbgjOVvI/AAAAAAAABM4/lACL_y5aoRU/s1600/farmhouse%2Bchristmas%2Bvignette%2B-%2Btime%2Blapse%2B-%2B05.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Al4i1kWccHk/VGalbgjOVvI/AAAAAAAABM4/lACL_y5aoRU/s1600/farmhouse%2Bchristmas%2Bvignette%2B-%2Btime%2Blapse%2B-%2B05.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now how about a blue milk glass globe and a twig snowflake:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-43i2GPL3Vqg/VGaluD3xL0I/AAAAAAAABNA/Ya-_MjleM2o/s1600/farmhouse%2Bchristmas%2Bvignette%2B-%2Btime%2Blapse%2B-%2B09.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-43i2GPL3Vqg/VGaluD3xL0I/AAAAAAAABNA/Ya-_MjleM2o/s1600/farmhouse%2Bchristmas%2Bvignette%2B-%2Btime%2Blapse%2B-%2B09.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Every Christmas vignette could use a lovely soft green wreath, and more milk glass globes, right? You'll see I also flipped Mr. Reindeer to face the other way and moved the twig snowflake down to lean against the lantern:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qvt9V86NplM/VGamkMwNg4I/AAAAAAAABNk/StFkihmAWE4/s1600/farmhouse%2Bchristmas%2Bvignette%2B-%2Btime%2Blapse%2B-%2B16.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qvt9V86NplM/VGamkMwNg4I/AAAAAAAABNk/StFkihmAWE4/s1600/farmhouse%2Bchristmas%2Bvignette%2B-%2Btime%2Blapse%2B-%2B16.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
As of this second, this Christmas vignette is done.<br />
<br />
Famous last words.<br />
<br />
Who am I kidding? I'm sure I'll be fussing with it for a few more days!<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[DIY lattice wall].</td></tr>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So after the <a href="http://herlovelynest.blogspot.com/2014/01/the-great-board-batten-project-entry.html" target="_blank">Great Board & Batten Wall</a>, and the <a href="http://herlovelynest.blogspot.com/2014/07/plank-wall-in-dining-room-reveal.html" target="_blank">farmhouse Plank Wall</a>, my nail gun was getting antsy and looking for a new project...</div>
<br />
Ta-da! A lattice wall at the staircase landing was born.<br />
<br />
Before:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Z4D80d4F1Zc/VF_YJW7WRYI/AAAAAAAABI8/h5pyFjfqNqs/s1600/01%2Bstairwell%2B-%2Bbefore.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Z4D80d4F1Zc/VF_YJW7WRYI/AAAAAAAABI8/h5pyFjfqNqs/s1600/01%2Bstairwell%2B-%2Bbefore.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the wall at the bottom of the staircase in view of the dining room, so it was a good place to do something fun.<br />
<br />
Cost: at $0.70 a foot, this one came out to $42 for the lattice. I already had the paint from the <a href="http://herlovelynest.blogspot.com/2014/07/plank-wall-in-dining-room-reveal.html" target="_blank">farmhouse Plank Wall</a> project.<br />
<br />
Since I measured and cut each piece on site, I just brought the miter box up from the garage instead of using the circular saw.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-boD90mXJ6Ps/VF_YFpQLNdI/AAAAAAAABIo/P0BEWBU7COU/s1600/03%2Bcutting%2Bthe%2Blattice.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-boD90mXJ6Ps/VF_YFpQLNdI/AAAAAAAABIo/P0BEWBU7COU/s1600/03%2Bcutting%2Bthe%2Blattice.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<br />
I used my awesome <a href="https://www.ryobitools.com/power-tools/products/details/552" target="_blank">Ryobi nail gun</a> to tack the lattice pieces to the wall. Have I mentioned that buying that nail gun was my most favorite-ist purchase I've made in years? I have? Ok.<br />
<br />
I measured and put the verticals up first, then filled in the horizontals. These lattice pieces were so super-lightweight that I didn't worry that my design missed every stud in the wall :-)<br />
<br />
Here it is nailed up and ready for paint:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5g1zxx4Fgqc/VF_YKI_YYnI/AAAAAAAABJI/JiFi_B-w_TI/s1600/04%2Blattice%2Bup%2Bready%2Bfor%2Bpaint.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5g1zxx4Fgqc/VF_YKI_YYnI/AAAAAAAABJI/JiFi_B-w_TI/s1600/04%2Blattice%2Bup%2Bready%2Bfor%2Bpaint.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<br />
Finally, it was time for a couple coats of paint. Last step: hanging my Oregon map art:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-X96B1R1dcms/VF_YLGIQbkI/AAAAAAAABJQ/To-qIk5Z9nQ/s1600/06b%2Blattice%2Bcompleted.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-X96B1R1dcms/VF_YLGIQbkI/AAAAAAAABJQ/To-qIk5Z9nQ/s1600/06b%2Blattice%2Bcompleted.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<br />
Yes that is my gorgeous Grandmother's high school picture underneath the light fixture:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5mMt7XDMLgE/VF_g-n7A6YI/AAAAAAAABJo/CKFwLFlMrCw/s1600/gigi.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5mMt7XDMLgE/VF_g-n7A6YI/AAAAAAAABJo/CKFwLFlMrCw/s1600/gigi.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-x9qs6VVdlFU/VF_YLhQJfiI/AAAAAAAABJU/hf58PKuuwKw/s1600/06c%2Blattice%2Bcompleted.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-x9qs6VVdlFU/VF_YLhQJfiI/AAAAAAAABJU/hf58PKuuwKw/s1600/06c%2Blattice%2Bcompleted.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[done!]</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I still can't decide whether to hang more stuff on the lattice wall or leave it empty and clean. What do you think?<br />
<br />
Sorry for the grainy pictures, guys. One day I'll get myself a real, big-girl camera!<br />
<br />

One of my favorite, affordable ways to decorate is to change out the art in my frames.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Yx_dtft2eqg/VFwzxOBN9WI/AAAAAAAABIA/jRVruGyZ3wA/s1600/printable_bird_thankful_colors.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Yx_dtft2eqg/VFwzxOBN9WI/AAAAAAAABIA/jRVruGyZ3wA/s1600/printable_bird_thankful_colors.png" height="640" width="512" /></a></div>
<br />
So I was taking down my Halloween decorations and thinking about Thanksgiving.<br />
And I realized that I didn't really have any Thanksgiving art.<br />
<br />
So I whipped up these simple printables, which you can download for free below.<br />
<br />
Just right-click on the image and choose Download Image [depending on your browser it might say something like Save Image].<br />
<br />
Have a wonderful holiday!<br />

</div>
You all remember the DIY Industrial Garment Rack we made last month?<br />
<i><a href="http://herlovelynest.blogspot.com/2014/09/diy-industrial-garment-rack-reveal.html" target="_blank">Click here if you missed the story and reveal</a>.</i>..it's a wee insight into our household dynamic.<br />
And my often wacky brain :-)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JNZgNtGGPPQ/VDGrXdisPbI/AAAAAAAABHQ/C2OGLCnxhoA/s1600/diy%2Bindustrial%2Bgarment%2Brack%2B-%2Bblogpost%2Bcollage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JNZgNtGGPPQ/VDGrXdisPbI/AAAAAAAABHQ/C2OGLCnxhoA/s1600/diy%2Bindustrial%2Bgarment%2Brack%2B-%2Bblogpost%2Bcollage.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<br />
I promised you the tutorial so here it is! This was a lot of fun to make and not only did it work perfectly for our overflow of guests last month, it looks awesome too. Well, according to me at least...<br />
<br />
Let's start with the materials. I'm listing the prices for everything [even items I already owned] so you can get a true cost of the project.<br />
<i><span style="color: #0b5394;">materials list and cost:</span></i><br />
[1] galvanized pipe [cut in 2 for the vertical bars] @ $14<br />
[1] galvanized pipe [for the top horizontal bar] @ $9.28<br />
<div>
[2] galvanized elbows @ $1.62 each = $3.24</div>
<div>
<div>
[2] galvanized flanges [the cool circle things in the image above] @ $5.17 each = $10.34<br />
<div>
[4] spinning casters/wheels @ $3.44 each = $13.76 [spinners are a must especially for this particular project!]</div>
</div>
</div>
[8] bolts @ $0.24 each = $1.92<br />
<div>
[8] washers @ $0.11 each = $0.88</div>
<div>
[8] nuts @ $0.06 each = $0.48<br />
<div>
[1] 2x6 radius edge cedar plank* [cut in 3 for the base] @ $11.07</div>
</div>
<div>
<div>
[1] 2x6 whitewood stud plank [cut in 2 for the underneath supports] @ $4.26</div>
</div>
<div>
<div>
[1] can Minwax dark walnut wood stain [already owned; used about 1/4 can] @ $4.78<br />
<i><span style="color: #38761d;">= $74.01 total out of my pocket, not bad!</span></i><br />
<i><span style="color: #38761d;">[*I could've easily used another whitewood stud plank which would've been $7 cheaper, but I liked the rounded edge on the cedar plank]</span></i><br />
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<i><span style="color: #0b5394;">optional materials, highly recommended:</span></i></div>
<div>
GoJo pumice hand soap [easiest way to clean the pipes; already owned] @ $3.29<br />
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-family: Times; font-size: medium; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px;">
<div style="color: black; font-style: normal;">
clear spray paint [for sealing the pipe; already owned] @ $3.76</div>
<i><span style="color: #38761d;">= $81.06 total with optional items</span></i></div>
</div>
<br />
Why I recommend the optional materials:<br />
Have you ever handled galvanized pipe? It's dirty and greasy!<br />
Since this garment rack was going to hold...well...garments, I definitely didn't want dirt and grease anywhere near my guest's clothes. So I wanted to clean the life out of the pipes and fittings, hence the GoJo which worked a treat.<br />
<br />
<i>Fair warning</i>: the GoJo will make the pipes shiny so if you don't want that, don't use the GoJo...<br />
but the alternative would be scrubbing those pipes with soapy water for *hours*. I didn't think I'd like the shiny pipes but I ended up liking the contrast against the rustic wood so it all worked out.<br />
<br />
<i><span style="color: #0b5394;">All right! Let's get cookin', shall we?</span></i><br />
1. measure and cut the 2x6 cedar plank into [3] 32" long pieces. these pieces will become the base of your rack.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1VcHx7uSsPU/VDGq266qq1I/AAAAAAAABGw/yATWUXorGEM/s1600/02%2Bmark%2Bboards%2Bat%2B32%2Binches%2Blong.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1VcHx7uSsPU/VDGq266qq1I/AAAAAAAABGw/yATWUXorGEM/s1600/02%2Bmark%2Bboards%2Bat%2B32%2Binches%2Blong.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[measuring and marking at 32" long].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
2. measure and cut the 2x6 whitewood stud plank into [2] 15" inch long pieces. they will be used on the underside to join the base planks together.<br />
3. lay the 3 top planks upside down and place some nails between the boards to provide a little spacing<br />
4. place the the [2] 15" inch long pieces across the 3 top planks.<br />
5. screw the 15" long pieces to the 3 planks. so not only are these 15" long pieces being used for joining, they're adding extra weight and stability to the rack.<br />
<br />
winner winner!<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xBh-n03-Ggs/VDGq0G0MLJI/AAAAAAAABGk/3n-Y5n_ne3k/s1600/04%2Bbottom%2Bbraces%2B-%2Bscrewed%2Bon%2Bwith%2Bspacers.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xBh-n03-Ggs/VDGq0G0MLJI/AAAAAAAABGk/3n-Y5n_ne3k/s1600/04%2Bbottom%2Bbraces%2B-%2Bscrewed%2Bon%2Bwith%2Bspacers.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[underside of the wood base].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
6. screw the wheels to the 4 corners.<br />
7. stain the wood your desired color; I dry brushed it on so the finish is a bit rustic.<br />
8. flip the base over so it's right-side up.<br />
9. screw the galvanized pipes together, placing the elbows at the top and the flanges at the bottom.<br />
10. have someone hold the pipe setup on the wood base so you can see where you want to secure the flanges to the wood.<br />
11. mark and drill the bolt holes:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9GoJ5U10zIE/VDGqz47_RDI/AAAAAAAABGg/bnTl_9nP2gc/s1600/08%2Bdrilling%2Bbolt%2Bholes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9GoJ5U10zIE/VDGqz47_RDI/AAAAAAAABGg/bnTl_9nP2gc/s1600/08%2Bdrilling%2Bbolt%2Bholes.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[drill holes for flanges].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
12. we'll be attaching the metal flange to the top of the rack with bolts, washers, and nuts. optional: drill out a recessed area so the washer is sunk into the wood. again, this part is totally optional; the washer sitting flush against the wood is completely fine.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wUbh6UDI7uQ/VDGq2ay7r6I/AAAAAAAABG0/epHk5YH5y4g/s1600/09%2Boptional%2B-%2Bdrill%2Bfor%2Bwashers.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wUbh6UDI7uQ/VDGq2ay7r6I/AAAAAAAABG0/epHk5YH5y4g/s1600/09%2Boptional%2B-%2Bdrill%2Bfor%2Bwashers.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[totally optional: drill recessed area for washer].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
13. drop the bolts through the holes, slide a washer on, and tighten the nut:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PTYm0Mu0ll4/VDGq4wJwx6I/AAAAAAAABHM/b5eVvf6vLUs/s1600/11%2Bunderside%2Bof%2Bbolt%2Battachment.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PTYm0Mu0ll4/VDGq4wJwx6I/AAAAAAAABHM/b5eVvf6vLUs/s1600/11%2Bunderside%2Bof%2Bbolt%2Battachment.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[underside with bolt, washer and nut].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
And voila, you have yourself a unique industrial garment rack...with wheels. shazam!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
It's that first cold snap. The smell of fires burning in neighborhood fireplaces.<br />
It's that time of year when I start eyeing my sweaters and vests. I can't wait to start layering.<br />
<br />
And though I love decorating with vintage goodies all year round, when October comes I seem to reach for and appreciate them even more. I guess it's that sense of history and sense of place. I yearn for it in the Fall.<br />
<br />
Today that meant nestling some vintage doorknobs and door plates in with my white pumpkins.<br />
Absolutely adore the sparkle on those doorknobs!<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PLZQpISUcWg/VCySAsO2x1I/AAAAAAAABFA/hrrYijVHQfA/s1600/white%2Bpumpkins%2Band%2Bvintage%2Bhardware%2B-%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PLZQpISUcWg/VCySAsO2x1I/AAAAAAAABFA/hrrYijVHQfA/s1600/white%2Bpumpkins%2Band%2Bvintage%2Bhardware%2B-%2B3.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[white pumpkins with vintage door hardware].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
We picked this hardware up about 15 years ago at an architectural salvage store. Salvage stores are wonderful treasure troves...I can spend hours there.<br />
<br />
It's also where we scored some gorgeous vintage salvaged windows, like this one we hung above the fireplace:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QW2qzTVRJQQ/VCySG2wWZXI/AAAAAAAABFI/J8wwP4nOlM0/s1600/reclaimed%2Bwindow%2Bhanging%2B-%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QW2qzTVRJQQ/VCySG2wWZXI/AAAAAAAABFI/J8wwP4nOlM0/s1600/reclaimed%2Bwindow%2Bhanging%2B-%2B1.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[vintage salvaged window].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<a href="http://herlovelynest.blogspot.com/2013/07/a-beautiful-reclaimed-window-gets-new.html" target="_blank">Here are the instructions for how we hung it</a> ; it was easy and she has a good story!<br />
<br />
Everywhere I look lately, I'm spying incredible vintage happiness. Like this Volvo in East Portland:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-exbEDLe6UVc/VCySLgFkcmI/AAAAAAAABF0/TZk5frGb7Jo/s1600/volvo%2B-%2Bbelmont%2Bdistrict.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-exbEDLe6UVc/VCySLgFkcmI/AAAAAAAABF0/TZk5frGb7Jo/s1600/volvo%2B-%2Bbelmont%2Bdistrict.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[volvo, east portland].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Amazing, right? What I wouldn't give to cruise around in that baby.<br />
<br />
While not strictly vintage, this adorable little creamer I found certainly has that vintage vibe, not to mention delicious Fall color:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[vintage-style creamer].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>

Of course there is always and forever the wonderful home section of Anthropologie, where this delightful beauty shot to #1 on my wishlist:<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[oh Anthro, you got me. again.]</td></tr>

<br />
Last but not least...I was installing a server at a client's new office last week.<br />
I about fell over when I saw this salvaged sliding barn door:<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[salvaged sliding barn door].</td></tr>

You guys would be super proud of me...it took every fiber of my being not to rip it off the track and run out the door with it. But I didn't.<br />
<br />
Only because it's too heavy for me to carry.<br />
<br />
I did, however, get the name of the guy that sourced and installed it :-)<br />
I'm not *completely* insane.<br />
<br />
Till next time, friends!<br />

11:02 pm. here I am again, lying awake thinking about all the projects I'd like to make with galvanized pipe.<br />
<br />
<i>[what do you mean I'm the only one who does this at night?! that can't be true.]</i><br />
<br />
11:11 pm. oh nuts! I just remembered we've got guests coming and there are more of them than there are guest rooms in our house.<br />
<br />
11:26 pm. I guess someone will have to sleep in the Mr.'s office...we can move one of the guest beds in there. that's cool, but there's no closet in that room.<br />
<br />
11:39 pm. eureka! we can make a rolling garment rack out of galvanized pipe! they can hang their clothes up and there will be a base for their suitcase, or shoes, or whatever.<br />
<br />
11:40 pm. zzzzzzzz....<br />
<br />
I woke up the next morning and couldn't wait to tell the Mr. all about my great and wonderful plan... <br />
<br />
"Guess what?" says I.<br />
"Uh-oh, what now Lucy?" says he.<br />
whenever I get a totally awesome idea, for some reason, I Love Lucy leaps to his mind. I don't understand this.<br />
<br />
"I'm going to make something" me, all smiles.<br />
"Okkkkk" like a fool, he cautiously wades in.<br />
<br />
Yea, that's kind of how most projects start around here. So we went from this:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

I am in love with this industrial garment rack!<br />
<br />
Now before you think I made it all for form and no function...well maybe I did.<br />
...after our guests all leave, I'll be taking this wonderful rack for my very own.<br />
<br />

Happy Fall, friends!<br />
<br />
I don't know about you, but I simply couldn't wait for Fall to arrive.<br />
<br />
Even though Fall doesn't <i>officially</i> start till the Autumnal Equinox on September 23, for me the first of September is my signal to start thinking about jeans tucked into boots. vests over turtlenecks. cool days followed by cozy nights under a blanket. my first pumpkin spice latte of the year. yummm.<br />
<br />
And of course velvet pumpkins!<br />
<br />
A couple of years ago, I created a ton of oh-so-easy velvet pumpkins [<a href="http://herlovelynest.blogspot.com/2012/11/lovely-easy-velvet-pumpkins.html" target="_blank">click here for the detailed tutorial</a>]. I made them in delicious colors like silvery-blue, deep olive, champagne, burnt orange, and rich chocolate brown.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[the original batch of velvet pumpkins].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I still adore that <a href="http://herlovelynest.blogspot.com/2012/11/lovely-easy-velvet-pumpkins.html" target="_blank">first batch</a>, and you bet your knee-high boots I already brought them out and scattered them around the house. But this year I wanted to create a black and white Halloween vignette so I whipped up some black and white pumpkins using crushed velvet from <a href="http://www.joann.com/" target="_blank">Joann's</a> and real pumpkin stems I've been hoarding since last year's [real] pumpkins hit the compost heap.<br />

Did you spy that delightful skull pillow in the back? I made that easy-sew pillow cover with some black and white skull fabric [also from <a href="http://www.joann.com/" target="_blank">Joann's</a>!]<br />
Pillow covers are a super-simple, inexpensive way to change out your decor for the seasons. If you want to make your own, <a href="http://herlovelynest.blogspot.com/2014/04/tutorial-easy-sew-pillow-covers.html" target="_blank">here's the detailed tutorial including measurements</a>.<br />

</tbody></table>
Whew! It's been a hot summer here in Portland. how has yours been?<br />
To escape the heat, we've spent a lot of days hiking at the Oregon coast.<br />
<br />
[Did you know that the entire 362 miles of Oregon's coastline is public land? Dang I love this state.]<br />
<br />
One of our favorite hikes is at Cape Falcon, located in the Oswald West State Park about 10 miles south of Cannon Beach. We've done this hike 3 times and I'm ready to do it again!<br />
<br />
Very important side note.<br />
<br />
Now this is critical, pay close attention.<br />
<br />
If you go through Cannon Beach, you must stop at Bruce's Candy Kitchen for the bestest saltwater taffy ever. Flavors galore! My favorite is the Marionberry of course. Jim's is vanilla. Three to five pounds seems to be our sweet spot.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-blaVWmR-cY8/U_KJOeB8ptI/AAAAAAAABA8/Po8nNt4Baj4/s1600/cannon%2Bbeach%2B-%2Btaffy%2Bfrom%2Bbruce's%2Bcandy%2Bshop.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-blaVWmR-cY8/U_KJOeB8ptI/AAAAAAAABA8/Po8nNt4Baj4/s1600/cannon%2Bbeach%2B-%2Btaffy%2Bfrom%2Bbruce's%2Bcandy%2Bshop.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[saltwater taffy, oh my!]</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Ok. Now that we've loaded up the obligatory taffy, we can motor south to Cape Falcon.<br />
<br />
There are a couple of trails here, the one we like is an easy to moderate 2.5 mile out-and-back hike [5 miles round trip] to the top of the Cape. At the top, you're rewarded with incredible views to the north and south.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DFhxDJ7f7RI/U_KHj29WZAI/AAAAAAAAA_s/328pQHKCwqo/s1600/cape%2Bfalcon%2B-%2Bon%2Bthe%2Btrail%2B-%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DFhxDJ7f7RI/U_KHj29WZAI/AAAAAAAAA_s/328pQHKCwqo/s1600/cape%2Bfalcon%2B-%2Bon%2Bthe%2Btrail%2B-%2B1.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[at the trailhead].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
This trail winds through dense forests so it's wonderfully cool and shady. Perfect for those hot summer days. The trees are all gorgeous of course, even the fallen ones. Maybe especially the fallen ones, like this beauty:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LD8dfLnO8GQ/U_KHsGggSFI/AAAAAAAABAM/GO3RbvpHS_s/s1600/cape%2Bfalcon%2B-%2Bon%2Bthe%2Btrail%2B-%2B8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LD8dfLnO8GQ/U_KHsGggSFI/AAAAAAAABAM/GO3RbvpHS_s/s1600/cape%2Bfalcon%2B-%2Bon%2Bthe%2Btrail%2B-%2B8.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[gorgeous trees and nursery stumps].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The trail is lovely and well-maintained. It's described as family-friendly by <a href="http://www.portlandhikersfieldguide.org/wiki/Cape_Falcon_Hike" target="_blank">portlandhikers.org</a> and I'd definitely agree.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-t-n5-kUN48Y/U_KPA7q0ViI/AAAAAAAABBU/rKcytDLKcIc/s1600/cape%2Bfalcon%2B-%2Bon%2Bthe%2Btrail%2B-%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-t-n5-kUN48Y/U_KPA7q0ViI/AAAAAAAABBU/rKcytDLKcIc/s1600/cape%2Bfalcon%2B-%2Bon%2Bthe%2Btrail%2B-%2B2.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[on the trail].</td></tr>

We splashed through a couple of creeks and came upon a nice view of Blumenthal Falls, which feeds directly down to the ocean...<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[part of this summer's lavender-picking haul].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
It's ok. You can say it.<br />
<br />
I am the absolute worst on keeping up with my tutorial promises. Between work [yea yea the boring stuff that pays our mortgage and my DIY hobbies!], having some lovely guests this summer, and spending weekends hiking our wonderful Pacific NW trails, I've fallen behind. Again.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
But here, finally, is the tutorial on the plank wall! It was crazy easy. The only reason it needed 2 people was because the boards were so long, that extra hands were needed to hold the far end while the first nails went in.<br />
<br />
Even though this wall is officially in our home's dining room, we temporarily moved our dining table into the kitchen and we're enjoying it there...so for now this room has been repurposed into a nice little reading area. I wanted to make it a bit more special-er, so I decided to do a horizontal plank treatment, <a href="http://herlovelynest.blogspot.com/2014/07/plank-wall-in-dining-room-reveal.html" target="_blank">which I originally revealed here</a>.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_QF1dHnmz3k/U8XGNwHO-AI/AAAAAAAAA8U/mY-Cb3pgVgg/s1600/plank%2Bwall%2B-%2Bsummer%2Bstyle%2B-%2B2png.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_QF1dHnmz3k/U8XGNwHO-AI/AAAAAAAAA8U/mY-Cb3pgVgg/s1600/plank%2Bwall%2B-%2Bsummer%2Bstyle%2B-%2B2png.png" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[plank wall. hydrangea style!]</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Bah, who am I kidding? I wanted to use my Ryobi nailgun, my favorite purchase ever. It got it's first use on <a href="http://herlovelynest.blogspot.com/2014/01/the-great-board-batten-project-entry.html" target="_blank">The Great Board & Batten Wall</a> and I've been looking for another excuse to break it out.<br />
<br />
Before we get going...<br />
<i><span style="color: #0b5394;">materials breakdown [all from my home away from home, <a href="http://www.homedepot.com/" target="_blank">Home Depot</a>]:</span></i><br />
[13] 10 ft long x 7.25 in wide x 1" thick primed MDF planks @ $15.78 each*<br />
[2] 10 ft long x 2 in wide strips for left end and right end [to cover plank length shortfall] @ $6 each<br />
[2] electrical outlet extenders @ $3.27 per 2-pack<br />
[trace amount] Patch N Paint Lightweight Spackling [already owned, $4.28 for 8 oz]<br />
[1/4 gallon] Behr untinted Ultra Pure White Eggshell, 1 gallon @ $26<br />
[1] Linzer smooth to semi-smooth paint roller cover @ $4.77<br />
Ryobi cordless nail gun [already owned]<br />
[6] quarters, for spacing between each plank row @ $0.25 each [I won't count these since you can spend them when you're done!] <span style="color: #3d85c6;">:-)</span><br />
<i><span style="color: #0b5394;">= $251.12 total out of pocket [not bad! but still, guess I have to keep working to pay for this stuff, huh?]</span></i><br />
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; color: black; font-family: Times; font-size: medium; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px;">
<i><span style="color: #0b5394;">minimal sweat equity</span></i></div>
<i><span style="color: #0b5394;"><br /></span></i>
<i><span style="color: #0b5394;">*you could cut the cost down by not going all the way to the ceiling and/or by using thinner boards. I opted for the more expensive boards because I wanted the 1" thickness to match my existing baseboards, so the planks would be flush with the baseboards.</span></i><br />
<br />
<br />
And here we are in progress, with almost half the boards up. Of course we marked the studs and nailed the planks into them for safety.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bEHibWrVEMM/U8W9r0ohjoI/AAAAAAAAA7s/sCzrfYcT6uc/s1600/plank%2Bwall%2Bprogress%2B-%2B4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bEHibWrVEMM/U8W9r0ohjoI/AAAAAAAAA7s/sCzrfYcT6uc/s1600/plank%2Bwall%2Bprogress%2B-%2B4.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<br />
<div>
<div>
For spacing between planks, we used 6 quarters along the top of the plank before nailing the next one up. If you squint, you can see the quarters along that top plank.<br />
<br />
True to form, stuff wasn't *quite* right. You can see the planks were just a hair short of reaching all the way across.</div>
<div>
The width of the wall is 10ft 3in and I absolutely did not want to buy 12 foot boards and cut every one of them, and end up with lots of waste. So as usual, a compromise was in order: we tacked 2 inch wide vertical strips to frame it in on each end and cover up the shortfall:</div>
</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-T-tUaKa7Lyw/U8W9aO1EdwI/AAAAAAAAA6M/fe6tP-5cL8M/s1600/plank%2Bwall%2B-%2Bclose%2Bup.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-T-tUaKa7Lyw/U8W9aO1EdwI/AAAAAAAAA6M/fe6tP-5cL8M/s1600/plank%2Bwall%2B-%2Bclose%2Bup.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[covering up the shortfall on each end].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
You probably also saw that we had an outlet and a light switch to deal with. We used outlet extenders to bring them just a hair forward, and used a jigsaw to cut holes in the 2 planks to accommodate the extenders.</div>
<div>
<i>Before I move on, let me stress that you should always cut off power to outlets and switches whenever you are doing any work on them. And of course, if you have any qualms or lack experience with this kind of work you should hire a qualified electrician. Safety first, last, and always!</i></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
All that being said, I cut the room's power at the circuit box, and unscrewed the switchplate covers. I then unscrewed the 2 screws holding the light switch to the wall and pulled it forward a little, passing it through the outlet extender. I didn't have to actually disconnect any wires. Using the 2 long screws that came with the outlet extender, I screwed the light switch back into it's home: </div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-M8_UC-TBVhw/U8W9dJePzHI/AAAAAAAAA6c/RqIDyOO0Y70/s1600/plank%2Bwall%2B-%2Blight%2Bswitch%2Bextender.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-M8_UC-TBVhw/U8W9dJePzHI/AAAAAAAAA6c/RqIDyOO0Y70/s1600/plank%2Bwall%2B-%2Blight%2Bswitch%2Bextender.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[outlet extender installed].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
Repeated the process on the power outlet.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here's the wall constructed and ready to paint! Since I wanted this wall to have a more casual look, I didn't caulk anywhere except where those brown trim pieces hit my existing baseboards. But honestly I could've easily skipped that step.</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AU_MWxGv98I/U8W9sEXB0AI/AAAAAAAAA7w/esAjzqH6wik/s1600/plank%2Bwall%2Bprogress%2B-%2Bjust%2Bneeds%2Bpaint.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AU_MWxGv98I/U8W9sEXB0AI/AAAAAAAAA7w/esAjzqH6wik/s1600/plank%2Bwall%2Bprogress%2B-%2Bjust%2Bneeds%2Bpaint.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[ready to paint].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
For paint, I just used Behr Interior Eggshell in Ultra Pure White, untinted. That's the color of my existing baseboards so fortunately I didn't have to worry about paint matching. You can see my favorite cheap edger [that black thing with wheels]. It's genius and works perfectly...I haven't taped a wall or ceiling in ages. I have to say I've tried more expensive edging tools that don't work as well as this $3 guy.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption"><br /></td></tr>

Sometimes I can't believe the stuff I hang on to. Like this old laminate and metal bookcase from college.<br />
Here she is before in all her blonde wood and black metal glory.<br />
<div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sj3_dPkCq-4/U2l7Zv_DwtI/AAAAAAAAA4Q/GzpMZigXsis/s1600/bookcase+before+-+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sj3_dPkCq-4/U2l7Zv_DwtI/AAAAAAAAA4Q/GzpMZigXsis/s1600/bookcase+before+-+1.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[before. can you say 1990s?]</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
"C'mon son let it go, you've been dragging that thing around for 20 years", I says to myself.</div>
<div>
"Yea, but I can make it better. Stronger. Faster."</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Well maybe that's a stretch. Let's just start with prettier and see how it goes.<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<br />
First I unscrewed the whole thing so I was left with the wood shelves separate from the bars that hold it all together.</div>
<div>
Now I know that sanding laminate is kind of pointless but I gave the shelves a little roughing-up with the orbital sander anyway. You know, just for laughs. Cause I'm crazy like that.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Next I sprayed the tops and bottoms of the shelves with Zinsser Primer and let dry according to the can's directions.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YrB1-kjKFRE/U2l7gW4URyI/AAAAAAAAA44/RyrzRLtD7Hg/s1600/spray+primer.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YrB1-kjKFRE/U2l7gW4URyI/AAAAAAAAA44/RyrzRLtD7Hg/s1600/spray+primer.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Up next on the shelves hit list: 2 coats of Ralph Lauren Artist's Studio in eggshell, a lovely grey-blue...oh yes, you've seen this paint before in my <a href="http://herlovelynest.blogspot.com/2013/08/kitchen-pantry-reveal.html#more" target="_blank">pantry reveal</a>. Shocker that I used it again, it's literally everywhere in my house.<br />
<br />
While the shelves were drying, I went to work on the metal pieces. Out came my new favorite metal spray, <a href="http://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Universal-11-oz-All-Surface-Metallic-Champagne-Mist-Spray-Paint-and-Primer-in-One-261415/202813444">Rust-OLeum Champagne Mist</a> , for 2 light coats on the metal pieces and the feet.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I let the whole shebang dry a couple of days for good measure then applied a protective coat of Varathane Water Based Clear Satin Polyurethane to the shelves...gives them a bit of protection and a lovely light sheen.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Finally, I screwed it all back together, and here she is! She's gone from Yikes to Yay.</div>
<div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0p9VxrGJ278/U2l7aQ7UwOI/AAAAAAAAA4Y/PAoJIkNty7Q/s1600/bookcase+-+after+02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0p9VxrGJ278/U2l7aQ7UwOI/AAAAAAAAA4Y/PAoJIkNty7Q/s1600/bookcase+-+after+02.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[after. hello gorgeous!]</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Now all I have to do is decide where to put her. I kinda liked these kitchen goodies gracing her shelves...maybe I can find a place for her in the kitchen.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tJdjChxUWio/U2l7ZRQXS2I/AAAAAAAAA4M/-ILp4Fy4Y38/s1600/bookcase+-+after+01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tJdjChxUWio/U2l7ZRQXS2I/AAAAAAAAA4M/-ILp4Fy4Y38/s1600/bookcase+-+after+01.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<br />

I hope you're having a wonderful Spring so far.<br />
<br />
I'm still working my way through my Spring Spruce Up...just some small changes in our home, little refreshers <a href="http://herlovelynest.blogspot.com/2014/03/a-little-bit-rustic-a-little-bit-glam-bedframe.html" target="_blank">here</a> and there.<br />
<br />
I showed you my easy-sew pillow covers that I made from <a href="http://www.worldmarket.com/product/tatiana+curtain.do" target="_blank">World Market's wonderful Tatiana curtain</a> panel:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-znQ07DvXmzA/Uxo2jnCdqeI/AAAAAAAAA0M/cVPweqkMM9Q/s1600/tatiana+curtain+pillow+cover+-+after+-+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-znQ07DvXmzA/Uxo2jnCdqeI/AAAAAAAAA0M/cVPweqkMM9Q/s1600/tatiana+curtain+pillow+cover+-+after+-+2.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[easy sew pillow covers - from World Market's Tatiana curtain].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Beautiful fabric, right? I'm so pleased with these and they couldn't have been easier to make. I actually got 4 covers from the smallest size curtain panel...what a steal!<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
Now believe me when I say that I can barely use the sewing machine my lovely mother so generously gave me [she claimed it was an <i>extra</i> machine, can you imagine?]<br />
<br />
So I can hem stuff and I sew a mean square. That's the extent of my mad skill set.<br />
<br />
Fortunately that's really all we're doing with these easy-sew pillow covers. Hurray, that's right in my wheelhouse!<br />
<br />
<b><i><span style="color: #3d85c6;">Step 1</span></i></b>: find an old pillow or buy an inexpensive pillow form at a fabric store like <a href="http://www.joann.com/" target="_blank">Joann</a>. Done! I had a couple of blue chenille pillows that had definitely seen better days:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6nW8tRed7sA/Uxo2kBrBBFI/AAAAAAAAA0I/a9ggZxixV-E/s1600/pillow+and+tatiana+curtain+-+before.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6nW8tRed7sA/Uxo2kBrBBFI/AAAAAAAAA0I/a9ggZxixV-E/s1600/pillow+and+tatiana+curtain+-+before.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[old blue chenille pillow].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
[It looks better already with the <a href="http://www.worldmarket.com/product/tatiana+curtain.do" target="_blank">Tatiana curtain</a> just draped over it don't you think?]<br />
<br />
<b><i><span style="color: #3d85c6;">Step 2, measure pillow or old cover:</span></i></b> if the pillow already has a removable cover, cool, just take off the cover, lay it flat and measure it. If not, you'll want to measure the pillow itself. Typically throw pillows are either 16"x16", 17"x17", or 18"x18". Mine were 18"x18" so this tutorial is based on that size.<br />
<br />
<b><i><span style="color: #3d85c6;">Step 3, measure and cut fabric:</span></i></b> you're basically going to cut a big rectangle out of your fabric, with the short edge of the rectangle being 1" wider than your pillow, and the long edge of the rectangle being double the length of your pillow plus 7". So for my 18"x18" pillow, I'll cut my fabric into a 19"x43" rectangle:<br />
19" equals the width of the 18" pillow plus 1 inch for hem allowance<br />
43" equals double the length of the 18" pillow, plus 7" ((18x2)+7)=43<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YR3146bxhd0/U0SEnKRkCyI/AAAAAAAAA2g/r2anEsTe1KI/s1600/tatiana+curtain+pillow+cover+-+measurements.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YR3146bxhd0/U0SEnKRkCyI/AAAAAAAAA2g/r2anEsTe1KI/s1600/tatiana+curtain+pillow+cover+-+measurements.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[measurements for an 18"x18" pillow].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
What?! I hear you ask...how did you get that from an 18"x18" inch pillow? Ok friends hang in with me here, I promise it actually makes sense...it's all to do with the hemming allowance and envelope closure overlap.<br />
<br />
<b><i><span style="color: #3d85c6;">Step 4, hem the 2 short sides:</span></i></b><br />
<ul>
<li>place the fabric pattern-side down on your table</li>
<li>fold one of the short sides in 1/2" and pin, run it through the sewing machine</li>
<li>if needed*, fold the other short side in 1/2" and pin, run the other short side through the sewing machine</li>
</ul>
*the beauty of using a curtain is that it can be cut so that one of short sides is the top of the curtain, thus one of the short sides will already have a pretty finished edge.<br />
Shazam!<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hKWehkNh3tE/U0R7j3AqJbI/AAAAAAAAA2U/WKqck2D-OJ0/s1600/tatiana+curtain+pillow+cover+-+pin+short+edge.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hKWehkNh3tE/U0R7j3AqJbI/AAAAAAAAA2U/WKqck2D-OJ0/s1600/tatiana+curtain+pillow+cover+-+pin+short+edge.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[fold short side and pin].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Now your rectangle should be 42" long: assuming you folded each of the short edges over 1/2", it's now 1" total shorter than your original 43" length.<br />
<br />
Ahhhh...starting to make sense now?<br />
<b><i><span style="color: #3d85c6;"><br /></span></i></b>
<b><i><span style="color: #3d85c6;">Step 5, sewing the 2 long sides:</span></i></b><br />
<ul>
<li>place your rectangle on the table with the pattern facing up</li>
<li>fold one short side in toward the middle</li>
<li>fold the other short side in toward the middle, overlapping it 6" over the other piece to create the envelope [see image below; I've folded up a little corner so you can see how much the overlap is; you'll flip this corner back down before sewing]</li>
<li>measure your folded fabric along each of the 2 long open sides, it should be 18" at this point. if it's bigger, overlap the fabric edges more toward the middle. if it's smaller, ease off a bit on the overlap</li>
<li>pin the layers together along the open sides</li>
<li>sew each open side shut, about 1/2" in from the edge. you're basically closing in the square at this point</li>
</ul>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-w3xoRNqChCw/U0R7iiJFtgI/AAAAAAAAA2M/MEKwvAbHHzE/s1600/tatiana+curtain+pillow+cover+-+envelope+overlap.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-w3xoRNqChCw/U0R7iiJFtgI/AAAAAAAAA2M/MEKwvAbHHzE/s1600/tatiana+curtain+pillow+cover+-+envelope+overlap.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[sewing the long sides together, with overlap].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LhzwPGr2yyQ/U0R7ilpoIfI/AAAAAAAAA2I/n96cayEjB90/s1600/tatiana+curtain+pillow+cover+-+sew+seam.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LhzwPGr2yyQ/U0R7ilpoIfI/AAAAAAAAA2I/n96cayEjB90/s1600/tatiana+curtain+pillow+cover+-+sew+seam.jpg" width="600" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">[sewing that bad boy shut].</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<b><i><span style="color: #3d85c6;">Step 6, turn right side out and stuff:</span></i></b><br />
<ul>
<li>turn your beautiful new pillow cover right side out</li>
<li>stuff your old pillow inside</li>
<li>admire!</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
